Our Adventures

Two new parents and a toddler

Quick update

There's no real news to report this week, but I made a little belly growth chart so all my out-of-town friends could see my progress. Today I'm 26 weeks pregnant!
We're excited to spend Thanksgiving in Raleigh with my dad. My step mom Judy is throwing me a baby shower for my North Carolina friends and family while we're there, so that should be fun. We will miss Thanksgiving with the Whittamores, but I think they'll forgive us this time. I'm so excited to see my family and my best friends - Kylie, Amanda and Sara!

Everybody have a great Thanksgiving!

Another busy, star-studded, baby-filled week

Last week went by in a blur. Election day was a nearly 12-hour workday.

Then on Thursday I got to go to Naples for the dedication of Baker Field at the Boys & Girls Club in Naples where I got to photograph Cal Ripken Jr. He pitched a few balls to the kids, which was really cool. He's a really down-to-earth kind of guy it seems. Check out my gallery from the event here.

On Saturday night, I got to photograph a dinner for 150 people who bid in a wine fest auction. The dinner was prepared by Top Chef's Tom Colicchio and was followed by a concert by LeAnn Rimes!
Of course, I didn't get to try any food, but I did get to hear a little of the concert while I was working. I also got scolded by Mr. Colicchio. Apparently he doesn't like to have his photo taken. Even though they told us we were welcome in the food tent. I guess they just wanted us to photograph the food. I still got a shot of him from outside of the tent. So hopefully I won't get a cease-and-desist order from his attorney for publishing them. he he he.

Before the dinner began, we got to interview LeAnn Rimes privately. So I actually got to meet her and shake her hand. She was really nice and gracious. She seemed genuinely happy to be there. Here's the photo gallery from the event.

I got an iPhone video of part of her new single, Spit Fire, which rocks by the way.

Oh and the house, er estate where it was held.....A. Maze. Ing. It was huge and right on the beach in Port Royal in Naples. The grounds were so big we almost got lost making our way back to the front to take the shuttle back to our cars. And the valet lot was full of Bentleys and Ferraris.

Sunday couldn't come soon enough. I was ready for a day off, but it wasn't totally a day of rest. In the morning I did some family portraits of the Luce family - my wonderful chiropractor, his beautiful wife and super-cute son.

In the afternoon, Scott's sister Emily came to visit with her new baby James David Risner. They are in town for a week from Puerto Rico, where her hubby Eric is in the Coast Guard. It was our first time meeting little JD, and we loved hanging out with him. We think he's super cute. And we're so happy our son will have such an awesome cousin to play with after he's born.

And finally, I'm growing like crazy. Well my belly is anyway. On Monday, the young girl giving me a pedicure asked me if I was having twins. She thought I was only days away from delivery. I cut her some slack because she was so young. But throughout the week, some adult women hinted that I was extra big too. Way to make a girl feel beautiful. Jeez.

For documentation's sake, the vertical line on my belly has appeared. The pain in my pelvis has begun when I walk, stand or move. But I do still love being pregnant. It's just amazing how everything changes week to week. And I believe I'm starting to feel the "labor warmups" aka Braxton Hicks contractions. The right side of my belly tightens every now and then. Plus I think he mostly lives in that side so it gets really lopsided sometimes. It's pretty funny looking. Speaking of funny.......Here's my belly jumping while waiting for my midwife appointment on Wednesday........

Baby Whittamore update - 23 weeks

On Monday, I had another appointment at my specialist's office. I have to go there in addition to my midwife appointments because of my autoimmune condition (which seems just fine right now, by the way.)

Baby boy Whittamore is growing and kicking like crazy. The doctor said he was bigger than average, but that wasn't too surprising since his dad was a 10-pound baby. As of Monday, he weighed 1 pound, 7 oz. and was 11.7 inches long. She also gave me a few 4D photos to take home.

I can feel him kicking quite often now - sometimes even when I'm standing. He is most often in the head down position with his butt up and mostly on my right side. When I sit on the couch at night sometimes, my belly is all to the right and much firmer on that side. The left side is sloped and softer. It looks pretty funny.

Sometimes when he kicks I can see my belly move too. Scott has been able to feel his movements pretty often when we're home together at night. But baby Whittamore gets really active around 11 pm after Scott goes to bed. Last night he was punching and kicking.

I've been trying to resist the temptation to buy stuff, and I've done pretty well so far. But I have given in a few times. I bought him a Florida State football jersey onesie that will hopefully still fit him next fall so he can watch football with Scott. The registry shopping went well and I've been trying to just add stuff to the registries when the shopping urge hits. My friend Lindi helped me register at Target and Babies 'R' Us the other weekend, and I also have a registry on Amazon with some items not found in stores. Some items are also much much cheaper there and most have free shipping!

Here's me and my big belly today......

A fun and busy week

Work is getting busier, and a mid-week night out is rare for us. But when I got an email saying one of my favorite bands, JJ Grey & Mofro, would be in town I bought tickets right away. They performed Wednesday night at the "World Famous" Buckingham Blues Bar.

It was their first show this far south "on the left coast" as they said. It's an unlikely but awesome venue with a great outdoor area out back complete with a beer-drinking mule. Yeah, it's a redneck kinda place. We enjoyed sitting on the deck and taking in the show. They sounded GREAT. They are from Jacksonville and sing a lot about old Florida. Kinda southern rock-blues-funk.

We did make it down front for the last song. I needed to dance a little. And the baby loved it, too. He was kicking almost the whole time. I feel him moving and kicking a lot now, mostly in the afternoon and evening.

There were no "pro cameras" allowed, so this is the best I cold do with the iPhone.

Here's a little YouTube video of their music in case you don't know........This song is called "Georgia Warhorse," like those crazy big grasshoppers, and it is apparently inspired by JJ Grey's grandma, who was one tough lady.....

and another song for good measure......"The Sweetest Thing."

Last Saturday we went to our eight-year-old niece Faith's first swim meet. She did great. She is always full of energy and constantly in the pool when we have family gatherings, so swimming is a natural choice for her. Unfortunately we could only stay for two of her four races. She did the 25-yard swim in all four strokes. Here's a few photos.

Finally, on Thursday, Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan came to town. It was a long hot day of waiting outside, but the photos turned out nice. And I think the bosses were pleased with the coverage. I sent a couple of photo galleries and several iPhone videos with supporters, Lee Greenwood singing "Proud to be an American," and comedian Dennis Miller speaking warming up the crowd before Ryan took the stage. Here's a link to the main photo gallery.

Here's a link to the news-press.com election page. If you scroll down and look on the right, you can see the videos from the event if you're interested.

And finally the obligatory weekly belly shots: 21 weeks!

As you can see, it was a busy week. Included in that was a 5-hour eye doctor's appointment (grrrrr) on Monday and four other long days of work. I'm now not only doing my job, but also part of another guy's job who just left. Not that I'm complaining..........it's just a lot.

I haven't been able to be home for dinner all week. So I'm looking forward to cooking dinner and catching up on TV tomorrow night. Tonight we're going out to check out the zombies and Zombicon in downtown Fort Myers after I get off work. And tomorrow my good friend Lindi is helping me register for BABY STUFF!

20 weeks

Tuesday officially marked the halfway point of my pregnancy!

I'm still feeling great, but starting to get a little limited. I now have to put my knee out to the side while putting on my pants otherwise it hits my growing belly. And bending over to put on socks and shoes is getting more uncomfortable, too. But hey, I can't complain. It's been pretty easy so far.

We had another ultrasound on Tuesday also. It was so cool to see him moving around in there. We think he was trying to suck his thumb. And once again, he was eager to show us his boy parts. The doctor wanted to measure his femur, but he just wanted us to know he was a boy. By the way, he is the size he is supposed to be. He is measuring right on with the due date or just a few days over.

And I've been pretty good about keeping up with my weekly shots........

And here's two photos from Sarah Coward, one of our fabulous new photographers at the paper. I always volunteer to model for her lighting tests before someone comes in for a portrait. That way I get some extra photos of myself taken without having to use the self-timer.

Hangin' with the Veep

Yesterday, I had the privilege of being in the with national pool of media that followed Vice President Joe Biden during his visit to Fort Myers. I've never been in the pool for a visit of the VP or President before, so it was pretty cool. I got to ride in one of the press vans that is a part of the official motorcade. We got a police escort through town - that's right, no red-light stops for us.

I was in a van with a reporter from the LA Times and a photographer from the NY Times. pretty cool. And I saved the NY Times photog's day by lending him my card reader after he lost his so he could transmit photos back to his editor.

We stopped at Mel's Diner on our way to where Joe Biden was set to speak. At Mel's, we were quickly escorted in a side entrance and in position when he came into the restaurant. He spoke to several groups of people, even sitting down with a couple of tables to chat. He was really down-to-earth even with the many secret service agents and photographers and reporters following him through the restaurant. The people that chose to go to Mel's Diner yesterday likely had a breakfast they will never forget.

Then we quickly got back into the vans and headed to the Wa-Ke Hatchee Park Recreation Center near Fort Myers Beach for his speech. Again, we made it in record time, since we didn't have to stop for any stoplights. Here's shot by our other photographer Sarah Coward of me down front taking some video footage.

And a few of my pics.....

Here's my video from the event. It's a little shaky, since I didn't have my tripod during his speech.

Check out the photo gallery if you want to check out all the shots from the event.

I'm pregnant!

Yes, as some have known and others have speculated, I'm pregnant. About 17 weeks, and we're really excited. We found out today that it's a boy. My best friends, Amanda and Kylie, were right from the start.

There was no doubt from the moment the technician placed the ultrasound wand on my stomach. This was the view we got. He wanted us to know immediately that he was a boy........

After a few kicks, he then turned over into a yoga pose with his butt in the air and went to sleep face down. So she didn't get a nice facial profile like last month. But all the measurements were right on, and she said we had a pretty good-looking baby in there.

This has been a pretty easy pregnancy. No real nausea, and I haven't been too emotional. Well -- until the other day when I broke down while cleaning out my closet and removing the many clothing items that don't quite fit right now. Everything is changing so fast, and I'm not used to watching the scale like this.

Because of the lack of nausea, I've had a hearty appetite and the slight weight gain that comes along with it. Don't get me wrong, I haven't gained too much weight, but it is hard to wake up each day slowly outgrowing all of your pants and shirts. Luckily Scott is being a great husband and walking a couple miles with me most nights so we can stay fit.

Thanks to the Be Band, some of my pants are still acceptable to wear. A few of my shirts are still acceptable too. I gave in a few weeks ago and bought some maternity jeans and shirts. They are much more comfortable.

Luckily I'm starting to look actually pregnant and not just like I had a huge dinner so that helps.

Here's a photo from last Friday, September 7th, when I was 15.5 weeks along. I plan on trying to do another photo of myself tomorrow for comparison.

And now I'm gonna be a proud momma and over-share more photos of my baby. Here's a few of the ultrasound pics from last month when I was 13 weeks along.

Living room progress

I thought I'd give an update on the living room. We still have to get the art up, but the rest is done. Let's not forget what it looked like before.

Here are a few iPhone pics, so excuse the quality. Notice our new Karlstad couch from Ikea. We moved some bookshelves from the spare room to use as the TV stand. We also rearranged the books by color for impact. We saw that recently on Home by Novogratz on HGTV.

And here's before again....

Stay tuned for a full update once we have some art up.

The rooms, they are a-changin'

We finally decided to start the long process of painting the wood paneling on the walls in the living and dining rooms. We started with the living room. Who knows when we'll have the energy to tackle the dining room, but hey, we're making progress.

Here's some before shots.....

We just got this awesome new dining table, the Parsons Table, from West Elm. We're working on finding new chairs and a new chandelier.

And here's our living room, complete with a very dirty red couch and a very dirty scratchy carpet. They gotta go. We're thinking about a new couch from Ikea. Hopefully we can get up to Tampa soon to get it.

Of course the Ikea club chairs have seen better days too, so they'll be replaced with something a little more stylish.

And we've got a new solution for the TV in the works.

But the biggest change will be when the walls get painted a soft grey. This weekend we applied three coats of primer to the living room. This photo is after one coat of primer, so you can see why we needed three......

And here's a shot after three coats. Ok we ran out of primer after two coats behind the bookshelves, but books and things and two coats of paint will hide any wood showing through. It's so much brighter already!

A Belated Recap of our July Fourth Chicago Trip

One word can describe the trip - HOT.

And not in the Paris Hilton way. It was steamy and nearly unbearable heat. We still managed to have a lot of fun exploring the city while ducking in to shops to stay cool.

After a 102-degree Fourth of July, I longed to get back to the 90-degree days of southwest Florida.

When we arrived on Sunday morning, July 1, Jack took the train from Evanston to meet us at our hotel, The Palmer House. He took us on a mini tour of the city.

First stop - Cloud Gate, aka The Bean.....

Then we went over the BP Bridge, which was really cool.

And then up toward the river. This is a cool building designed so each condo owner could have a nice view from their balcony.

We stopped at the Wrigley Building...

And we nearly got caught in an afternoon storm, which mercifully cooled us off. Very scary clouds here.....I thought for sure we'd see a waterspout over the lake.

After the rain passed, we headed back toward our hotel crossing the river again.

Here's the ornate lobby of our hotel. Notice the bride and groom on the second floor having a portrait taken and Scott walking below. It was a really nice hotel with really reasonable rates and a great history. It was the first "fireproof hotel" after the Great Chicago Fire. The candelabras were made by Tiffany.

That night we headed out to dinner and visited the Bean again. Here's us reflected in it. Our hotel was a block away, so we visited often to people-watch.

Here's a photo from underneath The Bean. So cool.

This is the fountain at Grant Park. It was in Married With Children.

Right beside The Bean was this piece of interactive art. The insides have faces of Chicagoans with water fountains perfect for kids to play under in the stifling heat. It was another fun place to people-watch.

The next day we planned to go to the Museum of Contemporary Photography, but it was closed since they were installing a new exhibit, so we wandered a bit. Here's the public library. I tried to pay attention to all the interesting architecture.

Then we hopped on the train down to Hyde Park to see the University of Chicago. It has really beautiful buildings, but we didn't stay long because it was about 100 degrees.

Here's Rockefeller Chapel, which was a bit of an understatement. It was grand and gorgeous.

We returned back to downtown and made our way to Navy Pier to take an architecture cruise on the river. We mistakenly thought it would be cooler by the water. The tour was informative, but the guide didn't shut up the entire hour - not once. Between the extreme heat, the crowded boat and the constant loud talking, we were happy to sit quietly by ourselves by the lake when we got off the boat. Here's a few pics from the tour.......

That night we walked several block south of our hotel to Lou Malnati's to enjoy some REALLY GOOD Chicago-style pizza. After we walked over to the park to check out Agora, a large area of headless and armless sculptures. pretty cool.

We made our way back up to Millennium Park only to realize we'd missed the free concert by a few minutes. oh well.

So we went back to the fountains to watch the kids play.

The next morning, we wanted nothing to do with the heat, so we headed a block over to the Art Institute of Chicago. We could have spent all day there browsing through thousands of years of art, but we had plans to meet Jack and his family for an afternoon at a private beach on Lake Michigan and then dinner. I didn't take many photos inside the Art Institute because I wasn't sure what was "legal" to photograph. Bit these two kind of show the mix of old and new there.

Back on the street for lunch.....

And finally we got on the train to Evanston to hang out at the lake with Jack and family and his dog Mary, who lived with us for many years. I didn't realize how much I missed her until I knew I would see her again. She was pretty excited to see me too and didn't leave my side for most of the day. It was a good time and the water was cold but very refreshing.

The next day, July 4th, we made the mistake of walking toward Lincoln Park - almost 3 miles. We stumbled into the water with our clothes on to cool off. Talk about heatstroke. It was 102 degrees. We should have planned better and taken a cab there, worn our swimsuits, and then walked around the park. Instead we endured the heat all the way there and left quickly in a cab to head for the Sears Tower observation deck where it was nice and air-conditioned.

And it had a great view.....

Then we sat in the heat waiting for a less-than-impressive fireworks show.

I leave you with two of my favorite photos from the week. My cartwheel.....

And this shot of Cyon Flare, a drag performer. I had just told Scott that I needed an interesting silhouette to complete my photo, and here came Cyon walking by in all her glory. Priceless.

Annual road trip to NC

By now, it's become an annual thing- our road trip to the North Carolina mountains.

Last year and in 2010, we made the trip twice. It's the one place where we keep returning - partly because my Dad and Judy live (sort of) close by in Raleigh and also because it's fairly cheap. Each year we try to pick a different corner of the mountains to visit.

This year we chose the Brevard area. We found a cute house with an awesome view by one of NC's newest parks, Gorges State Park, which is just a few miles north of the South Carolina border. Dad and Judy met us there so we could spend some time together.

The house where we stayed was called "Simply Gorges," and it lived up to its name. The house was completely renovated with two huge decks over looking the mountains and Lake Jocassee. The hot tub was fabulous and the beds were extremely comfortable, which made for a nice relaxing vacation.

It rained off and on all week, which forced us to relax at the house a little more than we normally do. And that was fine with us.

Whitewater Falls

The famous Brevard white squirrels.......so cute. And the students at Brevard College have made them into little beggars. This one let me get closer and closer.

We visited DuPont State Forest, where "The Hunger Games" was filmed. "The Last of the Mohicans" was filmed there too.

Triple Falls. This waterfall was in the Hunger Games.

Hooker Falls, Dupont State Forest

We also had the opportunity to visit a waterfall on private property thanks to the woman who owned the house we rented, Debbie. She took us on a short, but extremely steep hike to see the property. This is the view of the waterfall from their tiny but awesome cabin. Nice, huh?

Here's the cabin....

and its incredibly awesome open-air bathroom.

We took one day to drive up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and stopped at Slickrock Falls in Pisgah National Forest.

And then the Davidson River.....

And then we hiked to Skinnydip Falls.....

Here's a pack of the most awesome hippies we've ever seen. They just came right out of the forest like this. The guy on the right has no shoes.

Here's another view from the deck of our house. We just loved it!

After we left, we stopped at Grandma Taylor's for lunch. She was so sweet to make us a fabulous meal. We just wished we could have stayed longer.

Here's us with Aunt Judy, my cousin Karsten and my grandma.

Then we headed to Myrtle Beach to see Amanda and Robert Stinnett and their kids, Evan and Mattie Jane. Amanda took us to Wonder Works to finally see where Robert works. It was a really fun time. Again, we wished we could have stayed longer.

Mocking baby

A few weeks ago some mockingbirds built a nest in the confederate jasmine on our front porch. When we woke this morning we noticed the baby wasn't in the nest and the parents were freaking out. Finally we saw the little one hopping around in on the vines and flapping its tiny wings.

Here's one of the parents feeding it.

Keeping watch....

Learning to fly....

And a little nap before leaving the nest. When we returned home from our tennis game this evening, it had flown away. It was quite an entertaining day.

Everblades win the Kelly Cup title!

As you probably know, my trip to Vegas two weeks ago was to photograph the Everblades, our local minor league hockey team, in the Kelly Cup Finals.

Games one and two were out in Vegas, and they won one of the games. Games three, four and five were back at home, so I covered those games too.

They won last Friday night and then again on Tuesday. Here's the link to last Friday's photo gallery. And here's the link to the photo gallery from Tuesday.

So as it came down to game five, the News-Press decided to do a special section to distribute on Wednesday night at the Arena if they won. I came in early to put in extra photos from the series. Here's the final product. I never got one in print, but here are the PDF files....

Luckily the won on Wednesday night, and I avoided another trip to Vegas. They won in overtime and with help from Sarah Coward, the paper turned out pretty well on Thursday morning. Here's my gallery from the win Wednesday. Here's the sports front.....

and here's the photo page....

Today, there was another special section. I gotta say, it was fun covering these guys. The guy in the picture above hugging the coach lost five of his teeth in the first game and I never even know he got hit because he kept playing. He must have spit his teeth on the ice and kept going. That's tough, y'all. It feels good to see a team win a championship and to feel like I captured a few of their happiest moments.  Sometimes I love my job.

Viva Las Vegas!

I saw the strip for exactly two hours last Sunday night when I arrived in Vegas. The rest of the time was spent in the lovely but depressing Orleans Hotel about a mile off the strip.

It was a clean and comfortable hotel, but it wasn't glamorous and I spent most of my time working. I was covering our minor league hockey team, the Everblades, in the Kelly Cup Finals against Vegas' team, the Wranglers. They played in the arena attached to the hotel, so it was convenient. The casino was full of slightly depressing-looking people smoking really long cigarettes. You get the picture...

Anyway, here's some of the few photos I took. We went to the top of the Eiffel Tower at the Paris Hotel.

Here's a little video of the end of the Bellagio water show....

And here's a few of the views from my hotel.
from my room....

And from the end of the hallway overlooking the strip. You can see the New York hotel...

While I was there, like I said, I was photographing two hockey games and covering practice and shooting and sending video for the website, so I was pretty busy.

You can click here to go to the News-Press website to see all the photos and videos I did while I was gone.

Here's one of my favorite photos from the games.....

and a little fightin' for ya....

And I got to see Mike Tyson and Carrot Top at the hockey games. Here's Mike Tyson...

On the way home I made sure I'd have a window seat. Luckily, I picked the right side and got to see the Grand Canyon from the air. It was so, well, big! The guy beside me probably thought I was a lunatic snapping away on my iPhone camera the whole way to Dallas.

This is Lake Mead...

 And the Grand Canyon...

Then there was a lot of nothingness. More than I have ever seen. No roads. No houses. No nothing.

Then there were crop circles.....

And more farm land....

Super Moon

Today we cleaned the house, but tonight we decided to do something different and actually photograph something in our own town. Of course I do that every day at work. But we usually don't take the camera out on weekends.

Today was different. It was the super moon. It's the closest that the moon will be this year and the brightest.

Without further ado...

And a few before the moon came up....

It's our anniversary

Today I've been married to my wonderful husband, Scott, for one year! Though we have had a little disappointment this year, we also had a lot of fun.

This weekend we went to St. Petersburg, FL, to celebrate a year of marriage. We wanted to go somewhere a little bit away from Fort Myers, but not too far. And we didn't really need to go to the beach since we just got back from Puerto Rico. St. Pete turned out to be the perfect choice. Bad weather was in the forecast for the weekend, but we dodged the rain perfectly. Saturday was perfectly overcast for this time of year because it kept the heat away so we could enjoy being outside.

We got in on Friday evening and walked around the city after checking in to the Hotel Indigo downtown. On Saturday, we got some breakfast before discovering the Farmer's Market just a few blocks away. Though the breakfast was good, I was wishing we'd eaten our way through the market instead. Everything looked so good.

We continued on to the Dali Museum, which was a first for both of us. Scott had never even been to downtown St. Pete even though he grew up in Florida, and it was my first trip for fun since we met. (I was there briefly for one night to cover Gov. Charlie Crist's election party for the newspaper in 2006.) The museum was a little pricey, but it was cool. Dali has quite a bit of art with depth. You could look at some of the paintings for hours and still see new things. The museum was right on the waterfront with a view of the many sailboats in the marinas.

Scott always likes to look for fish in the water wherever we go.

The Dali museum had some really cool architecture.

And a nice view of the bay....

I illegally took a photo of this painting because we thought it was really cool. It's Abraham Lincoln from faraway, but a woman closeup. It's called Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea which at Twenty Meters Becomes the Portrait of Abraham Lincoln (Homage to Rothko) by Salvador Dali, 1976.

Here's what the painting looks like up close.......I found this image here.

This is the wish tree outside.

And this is an accidental video of Scott with Dali's mustache. I meant to take a photo with my phone, but it was on the video setting. oh well.

After leaving The Dali, we walked over to Vinoy Park to check out the artfest. It was total serendipity that we ended up there because I love an art festival. Of course, we picked up some pottery from North Carolina.

That evening we went to dinner at Cassis on Beach Street downtown. I forgot to take a photo, but it was really good. Then we hopped on the shuttle to the Rays game from Second and Central downtown.

We've been trying to get up there for a Rays game for a while. One of my journalism professors, Jay Anthony, met us at the game and took these photos for us. He's such an awesome guy - definitely one of my favorite professors from college. Of course I forgot to get a photo with him, too.

The game was great. The pitchers were pitching fast (which makes for a shorter and less boring game) and the Rays won 4-1. The only problem was that the kids who were sitting next to us kept going in and out of the aisle past us the whole game.  It made it hard to pay attention to the game. It also didn't help that the girl in front of us didn't shut up the whole game. Trust me, she was seriously annoying.

Here's the view from our seats....

It was a great trip!

Puerto Rico, Part II

We had to come off the beach eventually because we got sunburned, especially Scott's feet. So we drove a few miles over to Luquillo and Fajardo to check out the towns. Here is Luquillo Beach.

And here is us in Fajardo.....

On the way back to the hotel, we stopped to eat at Los Kioskos in Luquillo. We had some fried dough with meat in it for a little snack and then headed back to the hotel for dinner - room service. Yeah, we're high rollers.

One last view from the hotel overlooking El Yunque.

The next morning we headed back toward San Juan to spend more time with Emily and Eric.
The took us to La Cueva de la Ventana or "the window cave," but I think the Spanish version sounds grander. You walk though a smaller opening and turn the corner and it opens up to this perfect frame with a river running through. Mind you, this is a place where you hike up from the parking lot of a Texaco station. Not exactly well-known. If this was in mainland America, there would probably be an entrance fee and hotels all around.

Here's the four of us in the window.

The next day we went back to Old San Juan to see El Morro, the other fort in town. It was a beautiful day. The clouds were unreal.

Loved the blue cobblestone streets in Old San Juan.

We loved Puerto Rico. Hopefully we can go back soon!

Puerto Rico, Part I

For Scott's spring break, we took a trip to Puerto Rico to visit his sister Emily and her husband Eric. They were married about a month before us (today is their one-year anniversary), and they moved to Puerto Rico last summer for Eric's job with the Coast Guard.

We stayed most of the time at their house, and the free lodging meant we could splurge on two nights at a beach resort and fancy dinners.

Our first full day was devoted to visiting and photographing Old San Juan. It's a cool place with a huge wall surrounding the city and great old architecture.

The basketball court with the best view I've ever seen.

Scott and Emily

After a rest, we went to this awesome beach to try to catch the sunset. We serendipitously ended up at a locals beach about 30 miles west of San Juan. Kids were EVERYWHERE, running and playing in the water. It was a little chaotic, but it was a fun vibe.

We then made our way back east a few miles to a quieter beach to wait for the sunset.

The sunset wasn't that great, but we did the best we could. The next morning we set off for the El Yunque rainforest. Our beach resort was near there, so we spent the morning hiking before we checked in.

The rainforest was beautiful. But we were glad to park ourselves at the resort and not drive for a few days. We had a rough trip out to the rainforest. We missed a few exits because the signs can be ambiguous and because Puerto Rican drivers are no joke. You have to always be on your toes and checking your mirrors when you drive there. I was glad I wasn't driving, and I was grabbing my "oh shit" handle while navigating the packed streets.

The resort was the Wyndam Rio Mar Beach Resort. It was something different for us because we always pack our vacations full of activities. So it was nice to have no real plans for at least one day. We actually sat on the beach for most of the day on Tuesday. And on Monday night, we had one of the best dinners we've ever eaten. I can still taste it. YUM! All these photos were taken with my iPhone because I didn't even take the camera out pretty much the whole time we were there.

Farmers Market and Puerto Rico

We are headed to Puerto Rico to visit Scott's sister Emily and her husband Eric for spring break. We'll be spending a few days at the beach this trip, just relaxing. I'll hopefully share some photos while we're gone and definitely share some when we get home.

In the meantime, enjoy this video I made at the Farmers Market Restaurant in Fort Myers this week.

I, of course, enjoyed some chicken-n-dumplins for lunch after my work was done. yum!

Papa's WWII photos

This week I've been scanning photos from a box of memories kept by my grandma from my Papa's service in WWII. He never talked about it very much, but it's a treasure that he was able to come back with so many great photos while serving in the Signal Corps. Most of the photos are from Italy, and it makes me want to plan a trip to visit the places where he was. The leaning tower of Pisa is obvious, but I'm still working on figuring out where some of the others were taken.

I was able to identify the Pontifical Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary of Pompeii, above, by using google images. The site is popular with Catholic pilgrims, so I'm assuming this photo was from some sort of ceremony related to that.
